Black or white as a controversial music in October 1991 was the first single taken from Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album released in 1991. The song was composed by Jackson while lyrics by Bill Bottrell. The single is considered the biggest selling rock song and peaked at number one on US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK singles Chart, as well as in 18 other countries around the world at that time.
In my interpretation, the title “Black or White” signifies racism between white people and black people as the main issue of its era. As we know, mostly black people considered as lower class or servant while white people is usually as the upper class. Jackson in this case, attempt to make a change through his song and to be able to create equality among people on the world.
This song has a real purpose and its lyric describes it clearly, it is about equality. From the lyric, I found many sentences which tend to explain it, such as; “if you thinking about my baby it don’t matter if you’re black or white”, “and I told about equality and its true either you are wrong or you’re right”, “I’m not going to spend my life being a color” this sentences reflect to the refusal of black people for being discriminative.
Overall, this song was created to erase the discrimination that happened as the global issue, and the main problem is not merely about race but actually just place where you life, faces and where your blood come from. The black people want to be considered as the same of white people class, and they want equality. So, the human relation become neutral.
